Procedure of linking Aadhaar with PAN

As per a Supreme Court judgement passed on 9 June 2017, it is mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar in your tax returns. However, if you do not have an Aadhaar then you can e-file tax returns without the same for FY2016-17. The taxpayers have been given time till the 1st of July.

Aadhaar and PAN can be linked through SMS also. The Income Tax Department has approved taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with their PAN by using an SMS-based facility which can be done by simply sending an SMS to either 567678 or 56161.

SMS can be sent to 567678 or 56161 from the registered mobile number of yours in following format:

UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN>

For example: UIDPAN 123451234512 ABCDE1234F

Also people can visit the official e-filing website of the department to link the two statuses, in both the cases i.e. exact names in the two databases or in case where there is a minor mismatch.
